I've just arrived home from my day as a judge. The entire election was a farce. In the middle of the day one of the judges cancelled out all of the paper ballots on the scanner. (Sheer incompetence and stubborness. And yes we rescanned the ballots but who knows what happens while the ballots are roaming around the room during the confusion.)
We also found a ballot that had been partially voted stuck in the middle of a shrink-wrapped batch that came from the Election Board. There could have been more that voters didn't notice because the races being voted were the ones few people care about.
Plus people were being refused a legit ballot because the stubborn judges don't understand what they are doing. It is a power trip for them.

Amazing how Forrest Claypool endorsed so many losing candidates - Jay Deratany, Mark Pera,Dean Maragos, Ed Smith, Eddie Winters in the 10th HD,John Moynihan in the 56th HD, Kenny Johnson in the 26th HD plus at least half of his judicial candidates lost - is Forrest's endorsement a kiss of death for a candidate?

The shocker in the 3rd CD is that Bennett did so poorly - less than 10%. Not as surprised that Lipinski got over 50%... but maybe this will remind many that, like his father, Lipinski knows how to work the halls of Congress to bring home projects for his district. Plus, there are still a lot of pro-life Democratic voters in the 3rd CD.

What I find amusing is that all of the candidates the Governor put up against the Madigan incumbents lost. Wow, Blago's coat tails are really powerful these days.

I like Alvarez a lot, and think she will be a force for good change -- but some of the TV folks are saying "she had no political background, she had no money" -- the first part is true, but her family self-funded $600K, which is why she had the most TV on the air.

It's not just Alvarez. If you look through the judicial races on the Chicago elections website, the women candidates tend to be whomping the men. To stand a chance against a female judicial candidate, a man needs a last name like "Burke" or "Byrne."
Something else that doesn't get talked about as much with the much-heralded "youth vote" is how girl-heavy it is. I had a pollwatcher friend email me earlier, "Do any men under the age of 25 vote in Chicago anymore? All the younger voters coming into my precinct are women." Women outvote men in general now, but it's especially pronounced now in the under-thirties.

Add Jan Schakowsky to the list of those whose endorsements are the kiss of death - her candidates for State's Atty, Water Reclamation, Recorder of Deeds and Board of Review. She couldn't even carry the 9th CD for her hand-picked candidate for Board of Review.

Baldermann will have a tough race as Deb Halvorson has built up a good following in the east part of the 11th.
And how about Joe Serra, who didn't really campaign, edging out Jotham Stein, an attorney who put in a good bit of $, for 3rd place in the 14th D primary?

I knew Illinois was considered a "blue" state, but to hear Illinoise (sp on purpose) went about 2.5 to 1 presidential is incredible to me. I really hope it's not just Chicago --- Because I want to believe that he can transcend race, class and, ultimately parry.
I pray, that the awful bigots out there, that when they show their faces, that they show the majority of America, that the color of this country is different shades of gray, not just black & white.
