After what I went through in 1994, I feel soooooooooo Repudiated :)
  • ArchPundit · 3 years ago
All with a Governor heading the ticket with approval in the mid-40s.

I imagine Emil will be throwing some of the Fax material over the last couple weeks back at you Rich.
  • Rich Miller · 3 years ago
Amazing, ain't it? I imagine he will, too. However, I would say that I was the first one to write that he could get that veto-proof majority. That is quite a mountain he's climbed. He's not there yet, but he's certainly close.
  • ArchPundit · 3 years ago
Even odder--Democrats only won the Senate four years ago. I'm completely blown away.
  • Cap'n Crud · 3 years ago
Rich: Regardless of whether he's vetoproof or simply got a stronger majority, does/can Emil now begin to assert himself more in the power-trinity with Speaker and Guv? Sure seems the Senate prez is the real star of this star-studded night ... can some of the starriness carry on?
  • Rich Miller · 3 years ago
If these trends hold, it's not impossible that Emil could have a veto-proof plus TWO. So, Larry, you're blown away? Ask Frank about that one. And Cap'n Crud, if I was Gov. Blagojevich, my first call would be to Emil Jones.

Rich, in looking at the Champaign County results, (45%) two things of note-

I'm not sure I agree that campus turnout was "huge" in absolute terms. Definitely up from 02 and 04, but not thousands of votes, more like hundreds. The usual Mark Shelden campus voting drama may also have been a factor. This time it was an ID requirement for some new voters.

Also of interest-at that point, Tim Johnson was only up by 300 votes in his home county..

Greens/SEP also drawing 20-40% in some campus precincts I looked at.

Oh man, he's going to be asking you if you are from Rockford or something.
  • Rich Miller · 3 years ago
Come to think of it, I did live there once.

Looks pretty likely that Granberg is going to hold on. Madigan picks up a seat.. Sorry times for the GOP
  • ArchPundit · 3 years ago
I thought I was going out on a limb predicting a 3 D pickup in the Senate, but I figured the national dynamics would throw them over--but I really thought that was a stretch.

the county and city sites are dead, and Periaca is optimistic for no reason on both Commissioner and President

Well the immigrants rights coalition had an army of over 1,500 young volunteers, working in Elgin, Carpentersville, Hanover Park, Schaumburg, Waukegan, Bridgeview, and a bunch of other places... including teams in Rockford and Champaign! Lots of yellow t-shirts, and all they did was run their voters all day. Their folks were upset about the Republican anti-immigrant lit. Looks like Sen. Jones, Speaker Madigan, and the Gov. all reaped some of the benefits!!!!

    Hmmmmmmmm

I too, was completely and utterly devastated after the 1994 campaign. I felt like the entire county was repudiating everything the Democratic Party believed – which had been my life mission.

This does feel pretty good! I would like to believe it is confirmation of Democratic values. But I think, instead, citizens dislike government and vote the people who have power out of power every decade or generation. (Assuming they see the President of the County as the head of political power).

I really don’t take much pride in the ticket the citizens elected. Small ancillary award – Democratic philosophy is a good way to live life.

But – jeez! What are we going to do with these people now?

    My President is Emil Jones!

What an incredible debacle for the Senate GOP. This has to go down as the worst tactical and strategic use of caucus resources in modern legislative history. Emil ran circles around them. SGOP plowed millions into Peoria (40-60%) and Demuzio (40-60%) and Syverson(60-40%) while losing razor thin races elsewhere. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING! Worse, with suburban GOP seats wiped out, Frank get's re-elected.
