CapitolFax.com: Projected: 49-39-11 – Associated Press Calls Election for Blagojevich… AP Calls race for Lisa Madigan, Jesse White *** Updated x13 ***

  • Snark · 3 years ago
AP just called it for Blagojevich according to CLTV.
  • RickG · 3 years ago
Snark is right, they used exit polls.

    AP calls for Blago
  • Anon. · 3 years ago
Pretty irresponsible to call an election based on exit polls, when some precincts are still open.
  • JohnR · 3 years ago
everyone is carrying the victory - sun-times, cbs.

    Must have been huge
  • JohnR · 3 years ago
quick... who's the first Topinka supporter to mention "Dewey defeats Truman?"
  • anon · 3 years ago
    vote for DOWNSTATE
  • Tony Soprano · 3 years ago
didnt the media learn anything about exit polls the last few years???
  • JohnR · 3 years ago
    The question now becomes -

    was this a mandate?

If it is a significant margin, blagojevich supporters can rightly argue so. Due to the attention paid to this race, you can't really argue that the Blagojevich win is just a tag-along with the anti-bush wave. Unless, of course, Republican turnout is astronomically low.

But that low turnout might be Judy's own doing, anyway.
  • Tweed · 3 years ago
It does seem pretty bold to call an election before a single vote has been counted let alone calling it after the second vote has been counted. Nevertheless when was the last time Topinka led ANY poll? March? May? When you don't ever lead or even come close most of the time in the polls, chances are you aren't going to win. It's that simple.
  • HappyToaster · 3 years ago
So how far down the ticket does the vacuum extend??
  • CrunchyCon · 3 years ago
local news just said those AP exit numbers are from 1,300 Chicago voters.
  • Toxman · 3 years ago
I just read update #5. All I have to say is "WHAT"?
  • Tony Soprano · 3 years ago
john - who cares... at least we get to see another governor indicted. something for the voters to look forward to!
  • WTF! · 3 years ago
I remember in 1990 the Associated Press and CNN predicted Hartigan would defeat Edgar. I think I'll wait for the results.
  • doubtful · 3 years ago
Wow, he must've stomped her for them to call it early. Like Obama/Keyes numbers.
  • RickG · 3 years ago
Not for nothing, CNN's first election results give JBT a 45-44 lead.
  • DuPage Dandy · 3 years ago
Insiders say the GRod margin was double digits in both rounds...which should good news for more Dems!
  • roadkill · 3 years ago
If CrunchyCon is right, AP may end up with egg on their face. I expect the results to be far different downstate. It wouldn't be the first time exit pollers were foiled by not taking into account the regional demographic differences of a state or district. FYI - I went to vote in my rural precinct outside of Springfield early this afternoon, at a time that's normally a little slow for the poll workers and ended up waiting in line and seeing a fairly long line behind me as I left. I would call it a heavy turnout.
  • Rick · 3 years ago
It's curious that they're calling this race, but not others, such as the AG or SoS races, where the margins have always been much, much larger, and I'm sure will be much larger.
  • ParkDem · 3 years ago
ChicagoElections.com is starting to post returns now...
  • Buck Flagojevich · 3 years ago
Hmmm. Glad I'm moving out of state. I can watch the debacle unfold from afar by keeping up through the Capfax blog.
  • JohnR · 3 years ago
They aren't calling the other races because they may not have polled for them. That's just a guess on my part.

just called the HOI newsroom (where I heard the "1,300 Chicago voters"). They are sticking by it...said they got it from the AP.
  • Jim in Accounting · 3 years ago
Why do we even bother voting downstate? Chicago gets what Chicago wants. Move the capitol North and be done with it. We surrender.
  • Anon. · 3 years ago
Judging by the responses to some of the questions Crunchy, i.e. corruption, that would not surprise me.
  • Toxman · 3 years ago
    Really,
"If you want then her it is"??? Please explain - I didn't learn your English....
  • Citizen A · 3 years ago
I voted for Topinka and then I voted for Patrick Fitzgerald. If the AP is correct in their obnoxiously early call then I am looking forward to RB's perp walk out of the gov's office in handcuffs. It certainly will be my entertainment through the gray winter days. If this prediction holds I will be amazed - amazed at the utter stupidity of the voters and their unbelievable tolerance if not embracement of corruption. If you voted for him then celebrate tonight as if their is no tomorrow - you won't be celebrating the tomorrow that is coming. Congrats to Quinn and double congrats to Fitzgerald !
  • anonymous · 3 years ago
taxman, in answer to your "what" it's the mandate that John R was asking about. raising the minimum wage, healthcare for their kids all fits into that demographic. people are tired of a persistent underclass, and having to work two jobs to get by(see six also)

I'm like Topinka. I like to see actual vote numbers before an election is called. CNN has Klobuchar winning the Minnesota senate seat and NO precincts have reported.

WMAY is reporting that JBT will push ahead because of the high turnout downstate, while Chicago's turnout wasn't very good. I also saw the same remark about Chicago's turnout earlier today on a Chicago paper's website (Can't remember if it was the Trib or ST). What gives???? AP should be quiet until we have some thing to count. Only 10 - 15% of precincts reporting right now.
  • Toxman · 3 years ago
    Thanks Silverback - much appreciated.
  • Lovie's Leather · 3 years ago
what is the deal with the Sun Times. They usually are a little quicker than this.
  • free pen day · 3 years ago
Hey, does AP get a fine or something for calling races before the polls are closed, or is that just a tradition and not a law?
  • RickG · 3 years ago
Silverback, there's no way those numbers are right.
  • Shelbyville · 3 years ago
Go to CBS2 and take a look at the state map in the governor's race . Downstate hasn't even began to report in.
  • Martha Mitchell · 3 years ago
I see by the predictions on WMAY and here that it looks like most of the crooks will be elected and re-elected by big margins. Apparently, dishonesty, unsavory friends and fundraisers, fudging state finances, federal investigations and subpoenas and using taxpayer's dollars to get reelected doesn't bother the majority of the citizens of Illinois. A pox on all their houses. Maybe voters need to educate themselves before the next round of elections.
  • Lt. Guv · 3 years ago
The numbers Silverback posted are from the City of Chicago.

    Martha,
Maybe you should join the mainstream.
  • Shadoobie · 3 years ago
This will have changed by the time I typed it:

    Sangamon County

    13.36 of precincts reporting (31/232)

    * Rod -- 2,705 votes = 26.25%
    * Judy – 6,309 votes = 61.23%
    * Rich W. – 1,234 votes = 11.98%
  • Lovie's Leather · 3 years ago
How does Chicago go from not being able to count hardly anything, to being first to be counted???
  • Regnad Kcin · 3 years ago
Martha, unfortunate as it may seem, who we elect is a reflection on us. We complain about the crooked, unsavory, etc. but we go on out and elect them. We have no one to blame but ourselves. Look at what happened in the campaigns. What rational person would want to get involved in something where you're figuratively ripped to pieces. It's only going to change if we change.

Dewey is way ahead in early polling tonight. Those Sangamon county numbers show just how Rod's employees feel.

I think there's time to open another bottle of tequila....

I'm going to ignore AP for another hour or two, until we get a better overall look. Downstate was key to Blags the first time around, have to see if it will be enough this year....
  • First Timer · 3 years ago
Blago did not do well with the 45-59 age group, and is being carried by the voters with incomes below $75,000, folks with no college degree and people who are union members. This makes little sense because it would be a rare day for an active Teamster union member with no college degree in the age bracket of 45-59 to make less than $75,000 (I know this to be true). So the exit polls must be based on the hospitality industry union members in Chicago. But let's set that aside. How ironic that Blago is doing poorly with his peers and baby-boomers in the 45-59 bracket. Why is that? Maybe it's because the taxpayers in that age bracket will be paying for his "press" programs until they retire.

This was a sad day for Illinois. Here's to my game plan to move to another state.
  • Associated pimps · 3 years ago
Early exit polling shows Blagojevich doing well with mobsters, con men, influence peddlers and carpetbaggers. But it's early, only the precincts in the three outer circles have reported yet from down below.
  • Shadoobie · 3 years ago
Gregor, agreed about his employees. There is or could have been a mandate in those Sangamon County numbers. Let's just hope he doesn't move out more jobs from Springfield.

I thought we were voting on two candidates for
Governor - Governor R. Blagojevich (yes, I have respect for the OFFICE) and Judy Topinka, not on outliers. I hope you are happy with your candidate. I was talking about the corruption in the Blagojevich administration - pay to play, dirty contracts, Rutan violations, checks for jobs, baby-sitters appointed to boards, and oh - Rezko (how could I forget). But again, I thought we were talking about the two candidates. As for now - congrats on your win - I hope you are proud to support Governor Blagojevich.

"I am glad you received shoes from Blagojevich’s Shoes for Democrats"

    Also known familiarly as 'AllKeds'
  • First Timer · 3 years ago
Gregor - I do think it was SEIU, but I also don't believe it was strictly AFSME - although there were a bunch of Executive I's who were put into the state union with the Executive II's and probably the PSA's to follow. While they do/will get the benefits and protection of the union, I would submit that the Sangamon County results will prove this theory incorrect. While these state workers are appreciative of being in AFSCME, they also are disgusted with Blago and his apparent disregard for Rutan, Vets Preference, Etc.

But I also don't think that an accurate exit poll would have him carrying the downstate Teamsters (assuming that in an exit poll, Teamster voters would be forthright and not be afraid of losing their jobs). Despite a huge attempt to get at the downstate Teamsters through their union newsletter, the message was backfiring. Downstate Teamsters are made up largely of the 45-59 age bracket and make more than $75,000 annually. Even though their union bosses were giving lip-service to backing him, the rank and file did not buy it. We'll have to see how some of the key downstate Teamster counties come in, ie. LaSalle, Will, Henry. While not enough to impact a statewide election, there are a bunch of Teamster union voters in those areas. If those counties are 50/50 or even 60/40, then Blago missed his mark with the true union member taxpayers. In essence, the union bosses were doing what they were told to do in terms of mailings, but the members didn't follow suit.

But, if he wins, why does he care anyway????? He'll be looking to those demographics to pay for the programs he continues to propose.
