Actually, all those devices that malfunctioned on the old "Get Smart" series (the shoe phone mucked up by bubblegum, the bunsen burner phone that kept blowing out, and the famous "Cone of Silence" where everyone could hear the conversation except the participants) serve as visual metaphors for the workings of the state these days.
