CapitolFax.com: Unsolicited advice

Dear Mr. Miller, instead of a "Flag" button at the bottom of each post, you need one that reads "Bite Me"
  • Rich Miller · 2 months ago
    Good idea. I'll ask Discus.

Dear Illinois Right Wing: Could you suspend the Auto da Fe for the next 13 months in order to elect someone to one of the top two offices? You can't count on a bad economy, Blago, and Lisa Madigan taking a pass every election cycle.

Dear Mayor Daley: Could you put the same energy, enthusiasm and resources you applied to the Olympic bid to shutting down the shooting galleries on the South and West sides? Now that would be a legacy.

Dear Chicago Park District and Bears: Could you just go ahead and install field turf at Soldier Field before someone blows out a knee as a result of your weekly sod installation?

    Auto da Fe?

    How literate of you.

Hate to nitpick, but it's "auto de fé"

This site is so slow it would have lost a drag race to Geo.
    Still might.
I blame the pretty borders and shading you copped to out of reader request.
We didn't have these problems when Mike was in charge, or Paul for that matter.
Kev, well that's a different story. This sight is moving about as fast as Kev after a long night learning.
  • Anonymous · 2 months ago
Kev was "learning" all that time? But that's not what HE told us. (No wonder Rich took the old site down; we can't cross-reference it now! lol)

Dear Blackhawks, it's hard to get really super excited about the most thrilling comeback in team history when you remember that the main ingredient is first giving up 5 goals. So, um, don't do that.
  • Ghost · 2 months ago
Blago: I saw this from the day [I started working out of my home office, so I could watch sports during the day unimpeded by work] when I first became governor, [I] tried to get out [of my basement], get [] to work [] and get some [box scores and insatnt replay's reviewed]. [Harris can do everything]
  • The_Doc · 2 months ago
    Dear Mayor Daley,

Wanna lead the "greenest" city in the US? Start by being a real advocate for the CTA. Your half-hearted, half-baked pleas to the GA for more cash only after threats of fare hikes and service cuts has worn thin. Invest a fraction of the effort expended on the quest for the Olympics. Fight to amend the skewed farebox recovery ratio. Dispatch your minions to the White House (or enlist the ones already there) and demand more federal dollars for the Circle Line, or whatever. Skim a large chunk of your TIF stash to plug the hole temporarily.

    Your inaction is inexcusable.

LOL on Blago saying that Quinn sleeps a lot and that's why he doesn't get anything done.

    and piggybacking on that...

Governor Quinn, why do you insist on fixing every problem in Illinois with the creation of a task force, commission or panel? The nursing home task force is just outrageous! It won't finish it's review until Jan 31st. do you honestly think that elderly nursing home residents who are in fragile physical and mental conditions should have to wait that long for safety issues to be resloved on their behalf?

assuming that nursing homes are housing mentally ill criminal felons with state monies, or guarantee of state monies, why not just take away whatever monetary incentive that nursing homes are given to house mentally ill criminal felons, and guess what? a lot of the saftey problems will go away, particularly those in which mentally ill criminal felons are involved. If the nursing don't get paid for the mentally ill criminal felons, they won't admit them.

How are you leading and exemplifying good government with these task force, commissions and panels everytime for everything? These are all- volunteer posts, right? If you honestly consider this leading and good government, then fire each and every one of your policy advisors and administration secretaries and just appoint volunteers to those posts, and save taxpayers money. But most importantly, you should have treated the nursing home saftey issue with a great deal of urgency, like Lisa Madigan rightly suggesgted. You should have personally been leading the charge on this., but you aren't. Sleeping? (p.s., it's too late now, so don't bother trying it now)

Dan Hynes, Scanlan (sorry, forgot your first name) and Republicans-
If I was you guys I would attack quinn on this nursing home saftey issue pronto. I wouldn't let up one bit. Hynes, if I'm you I come out with an ad talking about how Quinn has not been a leader as governor. You made mention of his over reliance on taskforces and commssions and panels in early August or so, and you'd be quite right to come at him on this. hopefully mark brown of the sun-times will better understand your position this time around. the illinois Senate s poised to treat this issue with more urgency than the governor who is running for election.

Dan Hynes if I'm you, I'm talking about the nursing issue, the MAP grant issue, the lack of bill payment issue (to the tune of $4-5 BILLION) while the governor was jet-setting to Denmark and anywhere else he could, hiring political staff at $70K on up to fill non essential state government positions, while ignoring persisting and growing state financial problems. Also, let people know in your next tv ad why you are running and why you care about office of governor. this needs to be stated within the first 10-15 sec of your ad. then you hit on MAP, Nursing home, political hiring etc. If the new political hires/appointees are getting the generous state (pension/health) benefits in this time of fiscal crisis, that's fair game to talk about too. We'll see how fast his campaign comes back with an ad in response to all of that.

So if the NHs don't take mentally ill felons, who does?
  • Scooby · 2 months ago
"This is the bill that will convert the state hospital for the insane into the William J. Le Petomane memorial gambling casino for the insane."
  • will county woman · 2 months ago
Mentally ill felons should be under the control and supervision of the Illinois Department of Corrections, and not in places where they have access to vulnerable nursing home residents. For crying out loud, an elderly nursing home resident was raped by a 20 y.o mentally ill felon living among her in a nursing home. did you read the link that I posted? if not just look in the lower left-hand side corner and read the google article about the NH problem.

    p.s.

I am a supporter of Tamms in theory and practice, so spare me any bleeding heart type responses.

"Sheesh, man, fix the site. Why did it slow down all of a sudden? I gotta make me some money here, dude."

I second that emotion. I hate to say it, but the old site never seemed to have these problems. I know you have some bugs to get worked out, and I am sure that you will get them worked out, but at this point i am longing for the days of the site with the longer web address.

    Just sayin...
  • Rich Miller · 2 months ago
Actually, the old site did have a very similar problem. The difference is that it was an easier fix (more money for memory). This one isn't as easy.

Dear candidates who go around saying you won't raise income taxes, take a look around. That's pretty much how we got where we are today. The people aren't going to buy it just because you say it. We're way past that.

Slow is killing me. I'm not a "slow" guy. lol
  • 10thIndy · 2 months ago
Careful! The blog owner/admin doesn't put up with violent imagery ;) Don't kill the new site just yet Rich, there's great chunks of it worth the hopefully temporary aggravation
  • MeCindyLou · 2 months ago
Dave, I don't know why NH's should be expected to take mentally ill felons if they are not expected to take mentally ill veterans. Have an uncle with Alzheimers that ran his course through NHs, State Vet homes took a 'thanks, but no thanks, and he ended up at the Fed home down in Danville. Never did a day in prison and was a total sweetheart until the disease took his mind to the point he attacks anyone his mind percieves as a 'threat'. Mentally ill don't belong in regular NHs and there is no task force aka committee going to make me see it any differently.

Hey you changed the permalinks! :)

No unsolicited advice just happy you did.
  • sammy · 2 months ago
So, Rich; you think this new site is an IMPROVEMENT? Wow. Sorry; you most likely put a lot of work into it.
  • Keep Smiling · 2 months ago
Sammy, that's not very useful. There are many improvements with this site... it's easier to read, comment threads are available, there are multiple user-friendly ways to get access posts, it's more aesthetically pleasing, you can sort posts by newest, etc.

What about the old site do you think was better?

    Dear Rod Blagojevich
When you say things that aren't true, and you say them over and over again on national television it doesn't make them become true.

    Dear Ken Dunkin
Now would be a good time to not run again.

    Dear Senator Henden
Please talk more about pork in your campaign speeches. That will work well in a reform year.
  • Marc · 2 months ago
Rich, You're right on the money with your Lt. Gov. point. Come next summer, I think Quinn (or Hynes,) is going to regret not pairing up with a preferred LG candidate and helping him or her across the finish line. The GOP has got to be pulling for a Sandi Jackson win. Blago will be on trial next summer and Jesse Jr. could be one of the main characters -- that will make it real easy for the Republican candidate to tie the Dem ticket to Blago.

What happened to Kevin Joyce's LG candidacy? Did the Hynes family push him out?
